Our History: The Tidewater-Peninsula Baptist Association

The Tidewater-Peninsula Baptist Association (TPBA) has a rich and enduring legacy, rooted in faith, fellowship, and a commitment to serving both churches and communities in the Tidewater and Peninsula regions of Virginia.

The Early Years

The TPBA traces its origins to the late 19th century when Baptist churches across the region recognized the need for a collective voice and partnership to advance their shared mission of evangelism, ministry, and education. These early years were marked by a spirit of collaboration, as congregations came together to pool their resources, strengthen their ministries, and create a foundation for future generations.

Growth and Expansion

As the 20th century progressed, the association grew significantly, both in the number of member churches and the breadth of its outreach. This period saw the formation of various ministries aimed at addressing the spiritual and social needs of the surrounding communities. From missionary efforts to educational programs, the TPBA became a key player in shaping the religious and social fabric of the region.

In the midst of changing times, the association also played a pivotal role in navigating the challenges of civil rights, social justice, and the evolving needs of its congregations. Many churches within the association became beacons of hope and empowerment, fostering unity and resilience in the face of adversity.

Continuing the Legacy

Today, the TPBA continues to honor the legacy of its founders while embracing modern challenges and opportunities. Our association remains dedicated to its original mission of promoting fellowship, supporting member churches, and impacting the wider community through a variety of ministries. With over 28 member churches, TPBA serves as a hub for spiritual growth, leadership development, and regional collaboration.

Through our initiatives, we aim to strengthen the church’s role as a vital force for positive change—within the church walls and beyond. The association remains committed to "Rebuilding Our Foundation Through Regional Impact...For Churches and Community!" as we look ahead to a future filled with promise and faith.

As we celebrate our history, we also embrace the journey ahead, continually striving to expand the reach and influence of our churches to meet the spiritual and practical needs of today’s world.
